The Great Invocation

What is it?

A gift to humanity – a hopeful view of expanding consciousness. According to the School for Esoteric Studies, the Great Invocation is meant to be a combination of visualization (imagination), “meditation (mind), prayer (feeling and/or intuition), and affirmation (will).” It allows us to be fully engaged in spiritual work without adhering to the author’s beliefs.

I like that the invocation is spiritually inclusive, taking into account the common core beliefs of many religions. When you read it (in the quoted material from Unfolding: Awakening), consider the words with the following understandings. These are my own interpretations, so I encourage you to visit the link above and the Lucis Trust for a better framework in which to develop your personal view.

The “light of understanding from a basic universal intelligence” is how I interpret “the point of light within the Mind of God”. Enlightened understanding is something I as an individual and we as interconnected beings need a constant supply of. This energy can affect our attitudes, intentions, character, and goals. An illuminated mind improves our mental, physical, and social health.

“Love” in this context can be defined as an energy combining intelligence and compassionate empathy (I feel what you feel with you). This is the type of love we need to build relationships.

“Will” can be defined in many ways. I admit I have allowed myself to become truly irate with some of the concepts of will my friend The Alchemist has professed. An examination of “will” is for another post. For now, let’s consider the “Will of God” to be natural law and cosmic consciousnesses/intelligence and “human wills” to be guided into a cooperation, if not transformation, with universal harmony that is also personally healthy.

I especially welcome your posts on “the Plan”. These two words can set some of us off into our worst fears and best hopes.  Having pondered the intended meaning of “the Plan” within the Great Invocation, I feel more comfortable with it. Please presume with me that cosmic consciousnesses, at least for humans, is the collective goodwill, love, energy of healthy relationships, and the compassionate hope for self and all others. It would follow then, that such will and energy would preclude (render obsolete) unfounded fear of others, greed, disregard of others, and any empty (evil) behaviors that cause mistreatment of others or painful emotions within ourselves.

Thanks for going along with me on this one. I’d like to know how you form your own ideas.

The version of the Great Invocation used in Unfolding: Awakening is called the “Adapted Version”. At least 120 versions exist to accommodate various languages, religions, and cultures.

Why is it in the Unfolding series?

At the end of Chapter 3 in Unfolding: Awakening, Andrea and Drew are on an international phone call. This passage is from Drew’s point of view. The first speaker is Andrea talking about Tyler.

“I’m not ready to give him up yet, Drew. I would have been lost without him. I want to be able to help him now.”

“The best help is to be available. Be in the present moment when you are with him, or when talking on the phone. Don’t be typing away or playing solitaire. Give him your complete attention.”

“I need to help him.”

I began to recite:

“From the point of Light within the Mind of God
Let light stream forth into human minds.
Let Light descend on Earth.

From the point of Love within the Heart of God
Let love stream forth into human hearts.
May the Coming One return to Earth.

From the centre where the Will of God is known
Let purpose guide all little human wills –
The purpose which the Masters know and serve.

From the centre which we call the human race
Let the Plan of Love and Light work out
And may it seal the door where evil dwells.

Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.

“Everything always works out, Andrea, whether we want it to or not. He’ll eventually be fine. That’s why we keep coming back here, to work things out.”

 Why should you be interested?

Consider the personal benefits of affirmation, intention, meditation, constructive thought, and intercession. It’s all here. With thoughtful daily use, a person can improve his or her attitude and other attributes.

The more people who join in this Great Invocation, the more we become connected and the greater its effect. This can be considered spiritual work for one’s self and for humanity.

At the very least, participating decreases some of our stress and struggles.  Joining with two others in a “triangle” adds more depth of experience and sense of community.

Let love stream forth,

ConiAnn. Limpert

  1. Coni, thanks so much for posting about the Great Invocation. Your interpretation of the meanings of light, love, purpose and the Plan are very compelling and insightful. I encourage you to further expand on them.
