Spirituality and the Brain – Lectures in Neurotheology

Here lies the greatest of mysteries: why are people interested in spiritual connections?

Is it due to culture, or is something else at work? Are we imagining there are disembodied intelligences “out there,” or are we wired to seek out an experience with that which is greater than our individual selves?

We are fortunate to live in a time when details about how our brains function can be explored. Only by the late 1800’s was it possible to isolate and describe single neurons. In that short span of time, from the end of the nineteenth century to today, science has developed ways to monitor a living brain using noninvasive techniques. Volunteers are observed thinking about basic acts, or of more interest to this website, experiencing emotions, the paranormal, and transcendental experience.

Last year we stumbled upon the lectures listed below. We found them to be rich with information relating to the integration of the need of the Western mind to know how a thing works and the descriptions experiencers tell of what happens during specific spiritual practices. Of course, there is still a lot we can’t see or know about brain and mind function.

The series of six lectures vary in length between one hour twenty minutes to one hour forty seven. If you’ve wondered about how our Extra Sensory Perceptions may actually work, then taking the time to watch the series will be rewarding.

We are still faced with the ancient question:

Are we spiritual beings wired to connect with God?

Or

Are we only physical beings experiencing what seems to be spiritual?
