Genesis of the Unfolding Series

Unfolding: Awakening is the first novel in the Unfolding Series.

The novel began as a short story to offer several friends insights into the lifestyle I have adopted. You can read the beginning of the story at Amazon.

Encouraged, I continued to refine my writing and eventually joined Joan Kremer  at the Writers Symposium at Story Mountain Center for Writers in Second Life, where for over a year I read early drafts of scenes aloud each week we met.

Soon the story took on a life of its own — a compilation of little scenes adapted from a lifetime of experiences and strung together under a narrative arc used to describe the experience of awakening to a new level of awareness. My inspiration for this technique was Ray Bradbury’s The Illustrated Man, a collection of 18 short stories connected by a tattooed vagrant, or hobo,  who’s illustrations come to life revealing the next tale.

Unfolding: Awakening extends this idea by embedding the paranormal experience into the more intricate story of Tyler Anderson, a former law enforcement officer who undergoes a life changing event while visiting the home of his lover, Andrea Martin.

Unfolding: Awakening is written in a rotating first person perspective to bring readers in as close as possible by showing  what each of the major characters was seeing and how they interpreted events within a scene.

Virtually every scene within the novel has one or more seeds of truth in it. The story of Tyler’s evolution, from that of a person existing in a waking slumber to one more aware of his potential, contains many twists and turns where we learn about him, his nature, and the forces shaping his life. Particular care has been give to descriptions of shared lucid dreams and other altered states of consciousness. When possible, it is left for each reader to decide whether an event is paranormal, or simply explained using beliefs Tyler followed prior to the accident that changed his life.

By the time the story had finished itself some two years later, it was  approximately 200,000 words long. Once it entered the editing process we found there were actually two novels here: one of the awakening, described above, and a second of growth and adaption, taking place at a mythical spiritual campground called Brightwood, located in the mountains of Pennsylvania.

Unfolding: Awakening is the foundation revealing the potential humans may experience. It is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

The second and soon to be released novel, Unfolding: Nexus, is the adventure.
